A pot is an aggregate of all the bets made by all the players in a deal. After a certain number of betting intervals, the bet cap is reached. For example, in a three-card brag, the ante may be raised after the first three raises.
All other players must match the bet. When a high card breaks a tie, a second pair is formed. Similarly, when two or more players have a four of a kind of the same rank, the higher card wins. Lastly, when more than one player has a five of a kind of the same rank, a straight wins.
During the final betting interval, the dealer or the dealer’s opponent is allowed to cut the cards. As a result, the cards are revealed to the other players. Players may then replace the cards they have and make another bet.
In most games, the cards are dealt face down. However, some games such as Stud Poker have a few of the cards face up. Additionally, a few cards in Draw Poker are dealt face up as the betting progresses.
Most modern poker games have at least two or more betting intervals. These intervals are followed by a showdown. During a showdown, the last active player collects the pot without showing his or her hand.
A flush is made up of five cards of the same suit. Similarly, a full house is made up of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
Usually, a game consists of a series of rounds, each with a betting interval. Every round begins with the player making the initial bet. Afterward, the betting continues until all the players have folded. Only the player who has the best hand can win the pot. Alternatively, the player who has the lowest-ranking poker combination may still win the pot by making a bet that no other player calls.
