The word workout has a specific meaning. It essentially means an exercise session. Some folks schedule special workouts at fitness centers or other facilities, and recent studies show that typically, at least three to five hours of workout benefit the brain.

However, it is possible to get your workout during your everyday life. Doing cardiovascular exercises, is great for the heart and a great way to improve the physical fitness. But what is the best way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine? Here are some ideas:

Circuit training and compound workout. A combination of aerobic and strength exercises are known to be the most effective workout for overall health. Use a circuit training or compound workout to target major muscle groups and build endurance. This type of exercise session burns more calories and can also improve circulation. Studies show that those who exercise in a circuit or compound workout regimen have stronger muscles after the exercise than those who exercise in a more solitary manner.

Cardiovascular exercises may be a bit extreme but they can be part of a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of cardio-vascular activity, such as running, biking, dancing, swimming and other forms of aerobic physical activity, have been known for years. For example, a study on overweight and obese children found that those who participated in daily physical activity were less likely to become obese over the next seven years than children who did not participate in physical activity. The benefits of cardiovascular exercise are well documented and can help prevent the development of numerous heart diseases, including coronary artery disease and heart disease.

To improve brain function, consider incorporating short bursts of exercise into your workout routine. For example, use a bicycle or a treadmill for a few minutes to work your way up to a circuit training session. After your heart rate has reached a comfortable pace, change tracks and do a little walking or jogging. Jogging, in particular, is known to increase brain function and reduce the risk of stroke, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Other forms of exercise, including swimming, tennis to name a few, can also help improve your memory and reduce your risk of these diseases as well.

When you use workout equipment, remember to use them in moderation. Too much of any type of exercise can lead to a decrease in overall fitness and a greater likelihood of injury. Remember that everyone’s body is different and that what works for one person might not necessarily work for another. Workout routines can be customized to meet your individual needs and goals. A good fitness program should not only be fun and exciting but should also be beneficial to your overall health and well being.
