Poker is a card game played between two or more players. It may be played in any number of ways, but the object of the game is always to win the pot (the total amount of bets placed in a hand). Each player places chips (representing money) into the pot when it is their turn. Betting is done in increments, and players may raise, call or fold their bets as they see fit. The highest hand wins the pot at the end of the round.
Each player is dealt seven cards in a round. They must make a winning 5-card hand out of those cards. Some variants of poker require a player to place an initial bet, or ante, before being dealt any cards. A player who chooses to ante must put chips into the pot equal to the total contribution of the player before him.
After all the players have called, raised or folded their bets, a showdown takes place. In a showdown, each player must reveal their hand. The player who has the best five-card poker hand wins the pot. The remaining players must fold if they want to continue playing.
A poker game can be played with any number of players, although the ideal number is six or more. In a game with multiple players, it is common for one or more of the players to bet large amounts of money during the course of a hand. These bets can cause the pot to grow quickly.
Players must ante before they can bet, and once the betting has begun, they may check (put no money into the pot), call (match the previous player’s bet) or raise (put more money into the pot). Each player must also have a certain amount of chips in the middle to participate.

Some poker games also require players to make a blind bet before being dealt their cards. These bets can replace the antes or they can be in addition to them.
Some of the most popular poker hands are the straight, flush and three of a kind. If a hand is made of three matching pairs, the highest pair wins ties. A straight contains cards that are consecutive in rank or suit and a flush contains cards that are of the same suit. Ties in a hand are broken by looking at the high card. In some poker games, the highest card only counts as a single card. In others, it can count as part of a higher-ranking hand. The game is also sometimes played with wild cards, which can be used as any other card. A common wild card is the joker, which can be used to complete a straight or a flush.
